Willis Reed 1970 NBA Finals

Willis Reed was the captain of the Knicks surge to glory at the end of the 1960s and early 70s. The franchise made three NBA Finals appearances in a four year span with Reed taking home 2 NBA Finals MVP honors. However, he became a Knicks’ legend during one unforgettable moment in Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals.

With the NBA championship on the line, the Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers were set to square off in Madison Square Garden. Reed, the league’s MVP, was doubtful to play due to a leg injury he suffered in Game 5. In fact the injury was severe enough for him to miss Game 6. Not wanting to let his teammates down, Reed decided to give it a try. During warmups, Reed trotted out to the court with a noticeable limp prior to the start of the game to the surprise of the crowd...and players on both teams! The fans cheered loudly and the moment sparked the Knicks’ team.

Reed only contributed 4 points and 3 rebounds in his valiant effort. For the Knicks that night, it was the emotion Reed brought from playing in pain, the energy of the crowd and of course, Frazier’s 36 points and 19 assists, that propelled them to their first ever NBA title.
