Vernon Earl Monroe was born on November 21, 1944 in Philadelphia, PA. He is the son of Rose and Vernon Monroe. As a youth, Monroe was more interested in soccer and baseball before his love of basketball took over. Growing up in South Philly, Monroe played against the best talent on the city playgrounds which allowed him to create moves and shots that would make him one of the best players in basketball history.

Monroe attended Bartram High School. Although he was regarded as a good basketball player, his style of play was deemed not suitable for the nation’s top college basketball programs. Monroe decided to continue his basketball career at Winston-Salem State.

Earl Monroe In The 1973 NBA Finals

When Monroe was traded to the Knicks in 1971, the franchise was a year removed from capturing their first NBA title. With Hall of Fame point guard Walt Frazier, the two teamed up to be called the “Rolls Royce Backcourt”. These two guards, along with three other Hall of Fame players, center Willis Reed and forwards Dave DeBusschere and Bill Bradley, led the Knicks back to the NBA Finals in Monroe’s first season. However, they would fall to the Los Angeles Lakers 4-1. The two teams would meet again in the NBA Finals the next year. This time, the Knicks would claim the NBA title by winning the championship series 4-1. Monroe, who wasn’t a big factor in the 1972 NBA Finals, averaged 16 points and 4 assists in helping the Knicks clinch their 2nd title in 4 years.
