Walt Frazier NBA Career Stats and Notes
Frazier was the 5th selection in the 1967 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. Frazier got the nickname ‘Clyde’ due to his fashion. The hat he would wear resembled the one worn by Clyde Barrow in ‘Bonnie and Clyde’. He spent the first 10 seasons in the NBA with the Knicks, capturing two NBA titles. Frazier was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1977. He played three seasons for the Cavs before retiring during the 1979-80 season. Clyde was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987.
Walt Frazier: Knicks' Legacy
In 1970, the Knicks made their first NBA Finals appearance since the early 1950s. In game 7 of the series in Madison Square Garden against the Los Angeles Lakers, Frazier put on a show for the ages, scoring 36 points and dishing out 19 assists to lead the Knicks to victory. The game started out with Hall of Fame center Willis Reed making the emotional entrance into the Garden limping after a leg injury earlier in the series. In 1971, the Knicks traded for future Hall of Famer Earl ‘The Pearl’ Monroe. The two formed one of the best backcourts in NBA history. They even acquired the nickname ‘Rolls Royce Backcourt’. It panned out the first two seasons together. With other Hall of Famers on the squad such as Dave DeBusschere, Bill Bradley and Jerry Lucas, the Knicks won back-to-back Eastern Conference titles. They met the Lakers in both NBA Finals. After losing to the Lakers in 1972 (4-1), the Knicks became NBA champs again in 1973 with a 4-1 series win.
