Kevin Edward McHale was born on December 19, 1957 in Hibbing, MN. He is the son of Josephine Starcevic and Paul McHale. Kevin was a multi-sport athlete growing up and although basketball was the sport that he excelled at the most, hockey was his first sport of choice.
McHale attended Hibbing High School. A major growth spurt allowed McHale to become one of the best high school basketball players in his state. He led his team to the state finals during his senior season. McHale was also named Minnesota’s ‘Mr. Basketball’ as well during his final high school year. His excellent play earned him a scholarship to the University of Minnesota.

McHale played for Minnesota from 1976-80. He averaged 15 points and 8 rebounds during his college career. He led the Gophers to the NIT Tournament Final in 1980, where they came up short against Virginia.

Kevin McHale NBA Career Stats and Notes
McHale was selected 3rd overall in the 1980 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics. McHale played his entire 13-year NBA career with the Boston Celtics, teaming with Hall of Famers such as Larry Bird, Dennis Johnson, Bill Walton and Robert Parish win three NBA titles during the 1980s. McHale retired in 1993 and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.

McHale, along with Bird and Parish formed Boston’s original ‘Big Three’. From his rookie season, McHale became one of the cornerstones of the great Celtics team of the 1980s. The Big Three propelled the Celtics into the NBA Finals five times in seven seasons, including four straight from 84-87.
