William Theodore Walton III was born on November 5, 1952 in La Mesa, CA. He is the son of Gloria Anne and William Walton. Bill started to play basketball in elementary school. By the time he reached high school, Walton’s height was 6 ft. but he grew close to 7 ft. by the time he graduated.
Walton attended Helix High School. He led his team to two consecutive state titles and his high school career ended with a 40-game win streak. He set a national high school record with a 79 percent field goal shooting percentage. The high school All-American chose powerhouse UCLA to continue his basketball career at the college level.

Walton played for UCLA from 1971-74. He averaged 20.3 points and 15.7 rebounds per game during his college career. He led the Bruins to the Final Four all three years, winning back to back national championships in 1972 and 1973. During the title runs, Walton was named the Most Outstanding Player both times. He was also a three-time All-American and two-time college Player of the Year.

Bill Walton NBA Career Stats and Notes
Walton was selected 1st overall in the 1974 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. He was with the Blazers for five years but only played 4 due to injuries. In 1979 he signed with the San Diego Clippers and was with the team for six years. However his foot caused major problems and he had several surgeries during his tenure. He had to miss 2 full seasons at one point. In 1985, now a member of the Los Angeles Clippers, Walton was dealt to the Boston Celtics. He spent three seasons in Boston, and was the Sixth Man of the Year award winner on the 1985-86 team that featured Hall of Famers Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish and Dennis Johnson. That team defeated the Houston Rockets in the 1986 NBA Finals in six games. Walton would miss the 1987-88 season due to injury. He didn’t play another game in the NBA. Walton was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993.

Before injuries took their toll on Walton, he was considered one of the best players in the league. During the 1976-77 season, Walton had one of his best years in the NBA and showed what could’ve been a legendary career by the big man.
The Blazers finished with a 49-33 record that season, third best in the western conference. Walton had a great season averaging 18.6 points and 14.4 rebounds per game. He led the Blazers to their first ever NBA Finals appearance against the Philadelphia 76ers. Walton continued his great play in the Finals, averaging 18.5 points, 19 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game and powering the Blazers to their first NBA title. They defeated the 76ers in six games and Walton was named NBA Finals MVP.
