Dennis Wayne Johnson was born on September 18, 1954 in Compton, CA. He was born into a large family (sixteen children), and played baseball and basketball while growing up. His father was instrumental in helping shape his basketball game.
Dennis Johnson attended Dominguez High School. He didn’t earn a basketball scholarship while playing high school basketball. After graduating high school, Johnson decided to attend Los Angeles Harbor College.

During his two year junior college career Johnson improved his game dramatically. He led his school to a state title. Now standing over 6 feet tall, Johnson was able to get noticed. His efforts attracted scholarship offers and he accepted one from Pepperdine University. He played one year for the Waves, averaging almost 16 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists per game.

Dennis Johnson NBA Career Stats and Notes
Johnson was selected 29th overall in the 1976 NBA Draft by the Seattle Supersonics. Nicknamed DJ during his time in Seattle, Johnson played five years for the Sonics, helping them make two straight NBA Finals, winning the title in 1979. He was traded to the Phoenix Suns before the 1980 season and played there for four seasons. In 1983, DJ was traded to the Boston Celtics. He spent the rest of his career in Boston, adding two more NBA titles in 1984 and 1986 before retiring after the 1989-90 season. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.

During the 1978-79 season, his third in the NBA, DJ had his breakout moment. He would make the first of five All-Star appearances and his tenacious defense was rewarded as a NBA All-Defensive First Team selection. Averaging nearly 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists per game DJ led the Sonics to their second straight NBA Finals. In a rematch of last year’s finals, DJ and the Sonics came out victorious against the Washington Bullets, taking the series 4-1 and giving Seattle its first NBA title. DJ averaged 22 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists in the series win, which earned him NBA Finals MVP.
