Robert Lee Parish was born on August 30, 1953, in Shreveport, LA. He is the son of Ada and Robert Parish Sr. Growing up Parish didn't care much for basketball. Instead he played sports such as baseball, football and track. However it became apparent that his height would be better suited for basketball. He sprouted up to 6’8” while in junior high school! By then the basketball coaches persuaded him to give basketball a try. The rest is history.
Parish attended Woodlawn High School. Although he wasn’t very interested in playing basketball earlier in his youth, he became pretty good by the time he was a senior. During his senior year he led his high school team to a state championship. Parish, now at 7 ft., received all-state and All-American honors. He got scholarship offers from major programs but Parish decided to stay near home and chose Centenary College.
Robert Parish College Career Stats and Notes
Parish played for Centenary from 1972-76. He averaged 21.6 points and 16.9 rebounds per game during his college career. Parish’s college career was muddled due to a NCAA violation that led his team to be on probation. Despite not being eligible for postseason play or having his stats included in the NCAA record books at the time, his play on the court showed he was a top talent. He was a Second Team All-American in 1976.
