Moses Eugene Malone was born on March 23, 1955 in Petersburg, VA.   He was the son of Mary Malone, who raised her children on her own. Malone didn’t start playing basketball until he was 13, and his height was already 6’3” by that time. He worked hard on his game and when he got to high school, the hard work paid off.

Moses attended Petersburg High School. He was one of the most dominant high school basketball players in Virginia’s history. He led his high school team to two state titles and earned National High School Basketball Player of the Year honors in 1974. He was good enough to get drafted into the ABA after high school, which he opted for over going to college.

Moses Malone NBA Career Stats and Notes

Malone signed with the Utah Stars in 1974. Considered the first high school basketball player to go straight to the pros, Malone played two seasons in the ABA before the merger in 1976. He then started his 19-year NBA career with the Buffalo Braves via trade from the Portland Trail Blazers who picked Malone in a special ABA Draft. However, Malone didn’t last long with the Braves and was traded to the Houston Rockets after 2 games. .

Malone played six season in Houston before joining the Philadelphia 76ers for fours seasons. From 1986 to the end of his Hall of Fame career, Malone would play for four other teams: Atlanta Hawks, Washington Bullets, Milwaukee Bucks and San Antonio Spurs. He retired after the 1994-95 season. Malone was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001.

Moses Malone Back to Back MVP Seasons

Malone already had the distinction of being one of the rare players to jump from high school straight to the pros and have a Hall of Fame career. One of the reasons for this is due to what he did in back to back seasons in 1983 and 1984: win MVP. Although that has been done many times, no one had done it for two different teams!

During the 1981-82 season Malone, along with future Hall of Famers Calvin Murphy and Elvin Hayes, led the Rockets to a 46-36 record. They lost in the opening round of the playoffs to the Seattle SuperSonics 2-1. That was a far cry from the prior year when the Rockets played in the 1981 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics. Despite the early exit Malone was named the NBA MVP, the second of his career, after averaging 31.1 points and 14.7 rebounds per game during the regular season.

The Rockets traded Malone in the offseason to the 76ers. Teamed with future Hall of Famers Julius Erving, Bobby Jones and Maurice Cheeks, the 76ers finished with the best record in the NBA (65-17). Malone averaged 24.5 points and 15.3 rebounds per game, capturing his second straight MVP award. There was no early exit for Malone this year as his team only lost one game in the entire 1983 playoffs. Their run to winning the 1983 NBA title included a sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. Malone was also named NBA Finals MVP as he averaged 25.8 points and 18.0 rebounds per game during the series.
