Julius Erving NBA Career Stats and Notes

Erving was selected 12th overall in the 1972 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. However, Erving never ran on the court with Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson due to his agreement with the ABA’s Virginia Squires. In fact, Erving wouldn’t play in the NBA until 1976. The ABA merged with the NBA that year and Erving, who was part of the New York Nets franchise, was sold to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Erving would spend his entire NBA career with the 76ers, helping them become one of the best teams during the early 1980s. He retired in 1987 after 11 seasons, making the All-Star team every season. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993.

Julius 'Dr. J' Erving NBA MVP Season

Dr. J and the 76ers were a force by the time the 1980-81 season rolled around. Along with Hall of Fame guard Maurice Cheeks, the 76ers rolled to a 62-20 record, looking to avenge last year’s NBA Finals loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Erving had a monster season, averaging 24 points, 8 rebound and 4 assists per game. He would be named MVP that year. They would come within one game of reaching the NBA Finals but fell short in the decisive Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals to the Boston Celtics. The 76ers would get to the NBA Finals the next two years, and in 1983 led by Hall of Famer Moses Malone, Erving was finally able to get revenge against the Celtics and Lakers en route to winning the 1982-83 NBA title.
