Oscar Palmer Robertson was born on November 24, 1938 in Charlotte, TN. He is the son of Mazell and Bailey Robertson. The Robertson family moved to Indianapolis, IN when Oscar was young. He would grow up living in a segregated area of the city. When it came to sports, basketball became his passion during his youth.

 

 

Robertson attended Crispus Attucks High School, an all-black high school in Indianapolis, IN. He dominated the high school basketball landscape in Indiana, earning the state’s ‘Mr. Basketball’ in 1956. He led his high school team to back to back state titles in 1955 and 1956, with the latter courtesy of the first ever undefeated season in the state’s history. Robertson would also become a two-time all-state selection as well as a high school All-American. The high school phenom would continue his basketball career at the University of Cincinnati.

 

Oscar Robertson College Career Stats and Notes

Robertson played for Cincinnati from 1957-60 and continued his basketball dominance at the college level. The 3-time First Team All-American averaged 33 points and 15 rebounds throughout his college career. He led the Bearcats to the NCAA Tournament all three years, including two Final Four appearances in 1959 and 1960. Robertson led the NCAA in scoring all three years as well. He also earned College Player of the Year honors all three years.

Oscar Robertson NBA Career Stats and Notes

Oscar was selected as a territorial pick by the Cincinnati Royals in 1960. Nicknamed the Big 'O', Robertson spent the first 10 season in the league with the Royals. In 1970, he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. Teamed with future legendary Hall of Famer Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), the Big ‘O’ was finally able to secure an NBA title in 1971, with a 4-0 sweep over the Baltimore Bullets in the NBA Finals.  Robertson would play four seasons with the Bucks before retiring after the 1974 season. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980.

 

Oscar Robertson: Mr. Triple Double

Robertson’s game was special as he was a major factor in different areas on the court. He could score at will but he also took pride in his versatility with assists and rebounding. In the 1961-62, Robertson records the first ever triple double season. He averaged 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds and 11.4 assists per game. In his NBA career the Big ‘O’ totaled 181 triple doubles, a feat that had not been surpassed until 2021 by Russell Westbrook.
