Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, former name Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. was born on April 16, 1947 in New York, NY.  He is the son of Cora Lillian and Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Sr.  The young Alcindor picked up the game of basketball at a young age. He grew up going to Catholic schools in New York and Pennsylvania. By the time he reached high school age, he was already 6’8”, a big sign of things to come.

Alcindor attended Power Memorial Academy. It was the start of his dominance on the basketball court at every level. He led Power Memorial to three Catholic City Championships, two national titles and a 71-game win streak in the process. Along with winning came recognition as he was a three-time high school All-American and 4-time All-City selection.  Alcindor could choose any college he wanted in the country, and he decided to go to the best at the time and accepted a scholarship to UCLA. He left as NYC’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar NBA Career Stats and Notes

Alcindor was selected 1st overall in the 1969 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. His dominance on the basketball court carried over to his illustrious NBA career which spanned 20 seasons. After the 1970-71 season, Alcindor changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Jabbar played six seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks winning one NBA Championship. In 1975, he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers where he would spend the rest of his legendary NBA career. He retired in 1989 with several major records including most regular season MVPs (6), All-Star appearances (19) and points (38,387). These records still stand today. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 1970-71 NBA MVP Season

Although Kareem won six titles, NBA record 6 MVPs and two NBA Finals MVPs over his great career, winning all in the same season only happened once. During the 1970-71 season as a member of the Bucks, Alcindor (before the name change) had perhaps the greatest year of his career. The second year center, along with future Hall Of Famer Oscar Robertson, led the Bucks to a 66-16 record, tops in the NBA. Alcindor averaged 31.7 points and 16 rebounds per game, capturing his first scoring title. Alcindor powered the Bucks to the NBA Finals where they met the Baltimore Bullets led by future Hall of Famers Wes Unseld and Earl Monroe. The Bullets were no match as they were swept. Alcindor, already named the regular season MVP, won his first NBA title and earned Finals MVP honors as he averaged 27 points and 18.5 rebounds during the championship series.
