Robert Allen McAdoo was born on September 25, 1941 in Greensboro, NC. He is the son of Vandalia and Robert McAdoo Sr. Growing up, Bob not only had a love for sports but also for music. He played the sax in the marching band. However, sports would eventually win out between the two because of his height and athleticism.
McAdoo attended Smith High School. He was a gifted athlete, winning a state title in track and field and leading his basketball team to the state playoffs. Basketball was his primary sport and wanted to continue playing at the college level. McAdoo was unable to secure any scholarship offers from major programs due to his test scores so he enrolled into Vincennes University which was a junior college for two years. During those years he led his team to the national junior college title and earned junior college All-American honors. He would then transfer to the University of North Carolina.
