Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson Jr. was born on August 14, 1959 in Lansing, MI. He is the son of Christine and Earvin Johnson Sr. Growing up, basketball was Magic’s passion. He played basketball whenever he could no matter the time or place. As he got older, he got taller and became dominant on the basketball court.
Magic attended Everett High School. It was during his high school playing days that he got the nickname ‘Magic’ for his creative and outstanding play. During his senior year, Magic led his team to a state championship. He decided to continue playing basketball in-state by accepting a college scholarship to Michigan State.
Magic Johnson College Career Stats and Notes
Johnson played for Michigan State from 1977-79. He averaged 17.1 points, 7.6 rebounds and 7.9 assists during his college career. He led the Spartans to the NCAA Tournament twice, including winning the NCAA title in 1979. Magic was named NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player and consensus All-American during his sophomore year, which was his final season in college as he opted for the NBA Draft.

Magic Johnson NBA Career Stats and Notes
Magic was selected first overall in the 1979 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. He spent his entire NBA career in the purple and gold. His no-look passes dazzed Lakers and NBA fans for years. Early in the 1991-92 season, Magic retired from the NBA due to his contraction of HIV. The news shocked the world as one of the best NBA players ever career seemed to be over. Although he was able to play in the 1992 NBA All-Star Game(won ASG MVP), he missed the next four seasons before making a brief comeback during the 1995-96 season. He played nine games that season before officially retiring for good. Magic was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.
Magic Johnson and the Showtime Era
Standing at a height of 6’9”, Magic wasn’t the prototype size of a point guard. Add his amazing court vision and leadership skills, you now had a player who revolutionized the position and took it to new heights. Magic ushered in a style of play that suited Hollywood called Showtime. As the name suggest, it was must see TV when the Lakers played during the 80s. Not only did they put on a show with flash and style, but also with winning. And they won a lot with Magic in the lineup during the Showtime Era: 9 Western Conference Finals appearances, 8 Western Conference titles and 5 NBA titles. It was a decade of dominance that hasn’t been duplicated since.
