Super Bowl MVP: Phil Simms

Super Bowl XXI, played on January 25, 1987, was an exciting and memorable game that showcased the dominance of the New York Giants over the Denver Broncos. The Giants' victory with a score of 39-20 was a significant milestone for the franchise, securing their first Super Bowl win.

One of the standout performances of the game came from Giants quarterback Phil Simms, who had an exceptional day. Simms completed an incredible 88% of his passes, connecting on 22 out of 25 attempts (Super Bowl record) for 268 yards and three touchdowns. His accuracy and composure under pressure earned him the Super Bowl MVP Award, rightfully recognizing his crucial role in the Giants' triumph.

The Giants' offensive firepower extended beyond Simms, with notable contributions from players like wide receiver Phil McConkey, who made a remarkable 44-yard touchdown catch. Running back Joe Morris also had a solid game, adding 67 yards rushing and a touchdown to the Giants' impressive scoring tally.

Defensively, the Giants were equally impressive. Led by linebackers Lawrence Taylor, Carl Banks and defensive end George Martin, they stifled the Broncos' offense and limited their scoring opportunities. This strong defensive effort played a significant role in securing the Giants' victory.

While the Denver Broncos, led by quarterback John Elway, put up a valiant fight, they ultimately fell short. Elway had a respectable performance, throwing for 304 yards, one TD and one INT. Receiver Vance Johnson stood out for the Broncos with five catches for 121 yards and a TD.

Super Bowl XXI was the first of three Super Bowls for Elway in the decade. The Broncos with this loss fell to 0-2 in Super Bowls. This was the Giants first ever Super Bowl.
