Kevin Maurice Garnett was born on May 19, 1976 in Greenville, SC. He was the son of Shirley Garnett and O’Lewis McCullough. Garnett was raised by his mother and stepfather during his youth in South Carolina. At a young age, Garnett took to basketball and excelled at it. Not only was it his passion, it also became a place he could go to when times in his life got hard.

Garnett attended Maudlin High School for three years. His game improved steadily during high school. During his junior year, Garnett averaged 27 points and 17 rebounds per game, leading his team to a state title. His play also earned him South Carolina’s ‘Mr. Basketball’.

However off the court issues began and Garnett’s family wanted him to get away before it deterred him from his goal of making the NBA. For his senior year, the 6’11” Garnett transfer to Farragut Academy High School in Chicago, IL. Already a highly sought player, going to Farragut allowed him to play on one of the biggest stages in the county. He would routinely play against the best players in the nation. The improved competition didn’t matter as Garnett still dominated.  He averaged 25.2 points, 17.9 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 6.5 blocks per game, earning him All-American and National Player of the Year honors. Garnett could’ve gone to any college of his choice but he opted to jump straight to the NBA. He would be the first player since Hall of Fame legend Moses Malone to be drafted out of high school.

Kevin Garnett NBA Career Stats and Notes

Garnett, who also went by KG during his professional basketball career, was selected fifth overall in the 1995 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He spent the first 12 years of his career in Minnesota before a mammoth trade in the summer of 2007 sent him to the Boston Celtics. Teamed up with Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, the ‘Big Three’ led the Celtics to their first NBA title in over 20 years as they defeated Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2008 NBA Finals.

Garnett spent six seasons in Boston before a trade sent him to the Brooklyn Nets. After one and a half seasons in Brooklyn, KG was again traded, this time in mid-season to his former team in Minnesota. He spent the rest of his career with the Timberwolves, retiring after the 2015-16 season. KG was elected into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020.

Kevin Garnett 2003-04 NBA MVP Season

KG’s career can be summed up by one word: intensity. He brought that to every game he played in and to every team he played for. Known for his tremendous rebounding and defense, Garnett also showed he could lead a team to the playoffs with his offense as well.

During the 2003-04 season, Garnett averaged career bests 24.2 points and 13.9 rebounds per game as the Timberwolves set a franchise record with a 58 wins in the regular season. As a result, KG was named NBA MVP. He led the Timberwolves to a number of franchise’s firsts: division title, playoff win, playoff series win and berth to their first ever western conference final. However, the Timberwolves’ sensational season ended there as they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers led by Hall of Famers Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.
