Jason Kidd NBA Career Stats and Notes

Jason Kidd was selected 2nd overall in the 1994 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks. Kidd had an impressive rookie season averaging 11 points and 7 assists per game. His play earned him Co-Rookie of the Year honors with Detroit Pistons’ Grant Hill. Despite his early success, his time with the Mavericks was short as he was traded after only three seasons. Kidd was sent to the Suns where he would play for five years.

Prior to the 2001 season, Kidd was traded again to the New Jersey Nets. He would play the next eight years as a Net, leading them to back to back NBA Finals appearances in 2002 and 2003. However, they came up short both times, losing to the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs. Kidd would return to the Mavericks via trade in the middle of the 2007-08 season. In 2011, Kidd made his third trip to the NBA Finals. This time he was victorious, helping the Mavericks defeat the Miami Heat.

In 2012, Kidd played one final season in the NBA for the New York Knicks. He would retire in 2013. In 2018, Kidd was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Jason Kidd New Jersey Nets Early Years

Jason Kidd’s career was up and down in the beginning. Although he was Co Rookie of the Year, he was traded away two years after to the Phoenix Suns. Then he was traded again by the Suns to the New Jersey Nets (now known as the Brooklyn Nets) in 2001. Ranked as one of the great point guards in the game, Kidd up to that point hadn’t shown he can bring a team to a championship level. That all changed with the Nets.

Kidd, surrounded by players such as Vince Carter, Keith Van Horn, Richard Jefferson and Kenyon Martin, started to fulfill his potential. He led the New Jersey Nets, a franchise that has had little success in the playoffs, to back to back Eastern Conference titles. During these 2001 and 2002 seasons, Kidd averaged 14 points and 9 assists and 18 points and 8 assists, respectively. In the NBA Finals, the Nets faced off against powerhouses Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs. The Nets lost both championship series to two teams who combined to win 5 consecutive titles between 1999 and 2003.
