Grant Hill NBA Career Stats and Notes
Hill was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in 1994 NBA Draft, 3rd overall. In his first season, averaged 19 points and 6 rebounds a game, earning him Co-Rookie of the Year with Dallas Mavericks’ Jason Kidd. Hill’s career took a turn in 2000 when he suffered an ankle injury. For several seasons, Hill’s availability on the basketball court was limited due to injuries.
Grant would be traded after six years with the Pistons to the Orlando Magic prior to the 2000 season. The first four years of his Magic career was filled with missed games, including missing the entire 2003-04 season. Injuries plagued him for most of his time in Orlando and he wasn’t re-signed at the end of 2006-07 season. The Phoenix Suns took a chance on the future Hall of Famer and he played there for five years. It was during this point in his career that he was relatively healthy, even appearing in 80 plus games multiple seasons. In 2012, Hill signed with the Los Angeles Clippers in what would be his final season in the NBA. Hill retired in 2013. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.
Grant Hill Redemption
Hill’s career got off to a great start. Prior to 2000-01 season, Hill was a 5 time All-Star and made five All-NBA teams, with one year being First Team. The 1994-95 Co-Rookie of the Year was living up to the hype that came from his success at Duke.
However, Hill had a bad ankle injury at the end of the 1999-00 season. The complications of the injury lingered for years. In fact, over a seven year period with the Magic, Hill started only 195 games. Many felt that his career would be over.
Hill persevered, and with the Suns, he rejuvenated his career as he stayed relatively injury free. His second act wasn’t as good as his early years but Hill showed at times what could have been if he had stayed healthy throughout his Hall of Fame career.
