Troy Aumua Polamalu was born on April 19, 1981 in Garden Grove, CA. His parents parted ways when Troy was a toddler. He was raised primarily by his mother Suila Polamalu. Born of Polynesian descent, a young Troy moved from California to Oregon and lived with his aunt and uncle. Troy would stay in Oregon until he graduated from high school, becoming one of the state’s best athletes along the way.

Polamalu attended Douglas High School. He had a stellar career on the diamond and football field as well as on the basketball court. He was an All-Far League selection each of his four years playing football (made first team as a junior). Also during his junior year he was an All-State selection. In baseball, he was an All-State selection and was a 2-time All-League selection in basketball. With several major college football programs offering a scholarship, Troy decided to head back to California and play for USC.
