Jerome Bettis was born on February 16, 1972 in Detroit, MI. He is the youngest of Gladys and Johnny Bettis' three children. Growing up in Detroit, Jerome wasn't running over would be tacklets in pee wee football. Instead, his passion during his youth was bowling. It wasn't until he reached high school when he started to play football.
Jerome played several sports at Mackenzie High School in Detroit. Although he didn’t play football until he reached Mackenzie, it didn't take him long to make an impact. He excelled enough to earn player of the year award and be rated the top player in Michigan by his senior year. He would continue to play football in college at Notre Dame.
Jerome Bettis College Career Stats and Notes
Jerome Bettis career at Notre Dame was filled with success and heartbreak. During his sophomore year in 1991, he set a Notre Dame record with 20 total TDs. It seemed during his time with the Fighting Irish his team was always in the mix for the national title, but somehow would lose a critical game that would prevent them from achieving their ultimate goal. In 1992, for example, sixth ranked Notre Dame hosted the 18th ranked Stanford Cardinal. Bettis, who led his team with 16 TDs in his junior year, saw his team's national title hopes dashed with a 33-16 loss. It was a game that saw Bettis fumble twice in a pivotal 3rd quarter, a loss that would be their only one in an otherwise outstanding 10-1-1 season. Instead of coming back for his senior season, Bettis declared for the 1993 NFL Draft.

Jerome Bettis Super Bowl XL Homecoming
Not many players get the opportunity to retire on top as a Super Bowl winner in their last game, and in their hometown. Bettis got the chance to do both as the Steelers played the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL in Detroit, MI. No longer the starting tailback for the Steelers, Bettis played a big part during the game. He rushed for 43 yards on a team leading 14 carries as the Steelers won 21-10. Bettis’ journey in the NFL had come full circle. He retired as a champion.
