Howard Matthew Moses Long was born on January 6, 1960 in Somerville, MA. He is the son of Margaret Kirk and Howard Long Sr. Growing up, Long was big for his age and athletic but football was not one of the sports he participated in. It was due to him being the size of the older kids and he didn’t want to play with them. It wouldn’t be until high school when Long gave football a shot.

Long attended Milford High School. His introduction to high school football was made possible by a chance meeting. Walking to class, Howie was spotted by the high school football coach. He asked Howie to go out for the team. Although he didn’t know anything about playing the game of football, Howie learned quickly. He played well enough that he received college scholarship offers from major college programs. He decided to play college football at Villanova University.
