Francis Asbury Tarkenton was born on February 3, 1940 in Richmond, VA. He is the son of Frances and Dallas Tarkenton. The family moved to Athens, GA when Fran was young. In his new town, it didn’t take long for Fran to show off his athletic ability. He wowed the kids and coaches from Athens with his baseball skills. It was just the beginning of what was to come during his time playing sports in Georgia.
Tarkenton attended Central High School where he was a superb three sport athlete. During his high school years, Fran was named to Georgia’s All-State teams in baseball, basketball and football. He led the football team to a state title in 1955. When it came time to choose a college, Tarkenton accepted a scholarship to the University of Georgia.

Tarkenton played for Georgia from 1958-60. He threw for 2,100 yards, 18 TDs and 20 INTs and completed 186 passes on 317 attempts during his college career. He led the Bulldogs to an Orange Bowl victory in 1960. Fran was a 2-time First Team SEC selection.

Fran Tarkenton NFL Career Stats and Notes
Tarkenton was selected 29th overall in the 1961 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. He spent his first six years in the league in Minnesota before joining the New York Giants in 1967. After five years in New York, Tarkenton returned to the Vikings. He spent the rest of his career in Minnesota, retiring after the 1978 season. He help lead the Vikings to three Super Bowl appearances and at the time of retirement was the all-time leader in passing yards (47,003). Tarkenton was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986.

Fran Tarkenton may have been the all-time passing leader when he retired, but he also made a name for himself with his running ability. Before the likes of Lamar Jackson, Michael Vick, Randall Cunningham and Steve Young, Tarkenton was considered the best scrambling quarterback the game has ever seen. Called the Mad Scrambler, Tarkenton extended plays and drives countless times throughout his Hall of Fame career. On top of his passing yards mark, he also set a then NFL record with 3,674 career rushing yards.
