Derrick Dewan Brooks was born on April 18, 1973 in Pensacola, FL. He is the son of Geraldine and John Brooks. Derrick didn’t meet his father until he was a teenager and was primarily raised by his mother and stepfather A.J. Mitchell. Derrick started playing football at a young age. It didn’t go smoothly at first as he wanted to quit the first time around. However Brooks was told if he played football again, he couldn’t quit again. Derrick listened and his talent and work ethic made him one of the best defensive players at each level of competition.

Brooks attended Booker T. Washington High School. Derrick flourished ad a defensive player, earning some of the most prestigious honors a high school athlete could get. During his last two years, he had 29 sacks and 300 tackles. He was named National Defensive Player of the Year, was an All-American selection and was the top rated defensive player in the country. With those accolades, Brooks could’ve gone to any college in the nation. He decided to stay close to home and attended Florida State.

Brooks carved out his own lane in Tampa, and the hype around his ability to impact games and make defensive plays at each level was warranted.
