Walter Jones Bellamy was born on July 24, 1939 in New Bern, NC. He was the son of Theo and Walter Bellamy Sr. Growing up in a small town, Bellamy was always trying to make something of himself for a better life for his family. Sports were an option for him. Bellamy picked up the game of basketball by playing against the neighborhood kids. There were signs he was going to be a tall kid as he reached a height of 6 feet at 13 years old.

Walt attended Barber High School. He was a multi-sport athlete in high school, starting in both basketball and football. Both of his teams had success as well. He led his football team to a state title and the basketball team made it to the state playoffs. By the time he graduates, Bellamy was 6’11. He accepted a college scholarship offer to play for Indiana.

Walt Bellamy NBA Career Stats and Notes

He spent four seasons with the Packers franchise which became the Baltimore Bullets by the end of his career there.  Early in the 1965-65 season Bellamy was traded to the New York Knicks. He was traded in-season during 1968-69 season to the Detroit Pistons. Bellamy joined the Atlanta Hawks in 1970. After four seasons with the Hawks and one with the New Orleans Jazz during 1974-75, Bellamy called it a career.  He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993.

Walt Bellamy NBA Highlights

Bellamy had a great 14-year career in the NBA. The 4-time All-Star had his best years with the Chicago Packers/Baltimore Bullets franchise (which is now the Washington Wizards).  During his time with the Packers/Bullets franchise, Gilmore averaged 27.6 points and 16.6 rebounds per game. He also won NBA Rookie of the Year honors as well. Bellamy also set an NBA record for once playing 88 regular season games in one season. That was due to a 1968-69 in-season trade between the Knicks and Pistons whose schedules were unbalanced (35 games with the Knicks, 53 with the Pistons). With schedules more evenly balanced between teams in the NBA, this feat may never happen again.
