Timothy Theodore Duncan was born on April 25, 1976 in Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. He is the son of Ione and William Duncan. Duncan grew up wanting to be a swimmer. He wanted to follow his sister who competed in the 1988 Olympics. However due to Hurricane Hugo in 1989, swimming for Duncan wasn’t to be as the storm destroyed the pool used by the swim team. With the passing of his mother before his 14th birthday, Duncan decided to never swim again. He instead started to play the game of basketball.

Duncan attended St. Dunstan’s Episcopal High School. At 14 years old, a 6 ft. Duncan made the varsity team. By the time he was a senior, Duncan stood at 6’9”. His game got better every year and his hard work paid off. During his senior year, Duncan dominated his competition as he averaged 25 points and 12 rebounds per game. On defense he averaged 5 blocks per game. Although he lived on an island, his play and size got the attention of some big college basketball programs in the States. Duncan would accept a scholarship offer to play college basketball at Wake Forest.

Tim Duncan 2003 NBA Finals Game Six Performance

Nothing about Tim Duncan’s game was flashy. The Big Fundamental was the nickname he was given because of his style of play. No flair for the dramatic, no signature moves (unless you want to count his textbook mid-range shot off the backboard). He played defense, scored points and won championships. In fact, he did put up one of the greatest performances in NBA Finals history which combined all three.

In Game 6 of the 2003 NBA Finals, the Spurs looked to lock up their second NBA title in five years as they needed one more win against the New Jersey Nets. Duncan was unstoppable as the reigning NBA MVP scored 21 points, 20 rebounds, 10 assists and eight blocks. The Spurs won the game and Duncan was named Finals MVP for the second time in his career.
