Peter Press Maravich was born on June 22, 1947 in Aliquippa, PA. He was the son of Helen and Press Maravich. Pete’s father was a basketball coach and he moved his family wherever he took a job. Prior to maravich’s high school years, the family relocated to North Carolina. Pete didn’t have the height going into high school, being only 5’2” in the eighth grade. However his height, along with his game, would soon start to grow.

Pete attended Needham-Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC. Due to his short sizehe became known for his outside shooting during his high school career. Maravich would pull up from anywhere on the court. The other part of his game was the fancy dribbling that he became known for. During his senior year, Pete, now at a height of 6'4", was averaging over 20 points per game. He had scored at least that many points in all but 2 games that year. His father took a job coaching at LSU and Pete decided to join him.
