Paul Douglas Westphal was born on November 30, 1950 in Torrance, CA. He was the son of Ruth and Armin Westphal. Paul started playing basketball at a young age with his brother and father. As he grew older, he welcomed competition from different environments. It didn’t matter to him if he played basketball in suburban Redondo Beach or Compton with the inner city kids during the turbulent 1960s.

Westphal attended Aviation High School. During his senior year, Paul averaged over 32 points a game. His play led to major scholarship offers from big time programs. He decided to continue his basketball career at USC.
