Joseph ‘Jo Jo’ Henry White was born on November 16, 1946 in St. Louis, MO. He is the son of Elizabeth and George White Sr. Jo Jo learned the game of basketball at an early age and excelled at the sport growing up.

 

 

Jo Jo attended McKinley High School. His play earned him a scholarship to the University of Kansas.

Jo Jo played at Kansas from 1965-69. He averaged 15 points and nearly 5 rebounds per game during his Jayhawks’ career.  He earned All-Big 8 honors from 1967-69 and Second Team All-American in 1968 and 1969. He helped the Jayhawks reach the NCAA tournament all four years.

Jo Jo White NBA Career Stats and Notes

Jo Jo was drafted 9th overall by the Boston Celtics in 1969. He played ten seasons  for the Celtics, leading them to two NBA titles in 1974 and 1976. During the 1978-79 season, White was traded to the Golden State Warriors. After short stints with the Warriors and Kansas City Kings, he retired after the 1980-81 season. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015.

 

Jo Jo White 1976 NBA Finals MVP

In 1976, Jo Jo and the Boston Celtics were back in the NBA Finals, two years after their last title win. This time, the Celtics faced off against the Phoenix Suns. After four games, the series was tied 2-2 with both teams winning on their home floor. In the pivotal Game 5 in Boston, in one of the greatest games in NBA history, the Celtics prevailed in triple overtime 128-126. Jo Jo led all scorers with 33 points in the classic. The Celtics would win on the road in Game 6 to capture their second NBA title in three years. Jo Jo, who averaged 21.7 points and 5.8 assists in the 4-2 series win, was named NBA Finals MVP.
