Joe Dumars III was born on May 24, 1963 in Shreveport, LA. He is the son of Ophelia and Joe Dumars. Growing up Joe’s favorite sport was football. He didn’t focus on basketball until he reached high school.
Dumars attended Natchitoches Central High School. It wasn’t until his junior year when Dumars switched from primarily playing football to basketball. His athletic talent shined on the basketball court, earning him a scholarship to McNeese State.

Dumars played for McNeese State from 1981-85. He averaged 22.5 points during that time. His prolific scoring earned him All-SLC First Team honors all four years. When he finished his college career, he was the Cowboys’ all-time leading scorer with 2,607 points.

Joe Dumars NBA Career Stats and Notes
Dumars was the 18th overall pick by the Detroit Pistons in the 1985 NBA Draft. He spent his entire 14 year career with the Pistons, winning two titles. He retired after the 1998-99 season. Dumars was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
Joe Dumars 1989 NBA Finals MVP
In 1989, Dumars and the Detroit Pistons, after falling short in the NBA Finals the year before, completed their mission to get back to the championship round. Waiting for them again was the Los Angeles Lakers, a team vying to become the first to win three straight titles since the Boston Celtics in the 1960’s. The series wasn’t close as the Pistons swept the Lakers. Dumars was a huge part in the 4-0 series win as he averaged 27.3 points and 6 assists, which earned him Finals MVP.
