Isiah Lord Thomas III was born on April 30, 1961 in Chicago, IL. He is the son of Mary and Isiah Thomas II. Thomas grew up on the West side of Chicago, where poverty, drugs and crime ruled the neighborhood. Basketball was the way out for Thomas. When Thomas played basketball, it was sometimes with his older brother. He encouraged Thomas to keep practicing to improve his skills, and most of all stay out of trouble.
Thomas attended St. Joseph’s High School. He starred on the basketball court, leading his high school team to the state finals in 1978. He earned All-American honors as well. When it came time to decide where he was going to play college basketball, Thomas chose Indiana.

Thomas played basketball at Indiana from 1979-81. He led the Hoosiers to two NCAA tournament berths both years. In 1981, Thomas took Indiana all the way to the National Championship game. The Hoosiers defeated North Carolina to win the NCAA title, and Thomas was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. The All-American, who averaged 15 points and almost 6 assists during his college career, would declare for the 1981 NBA Draft.

Isiah Thomas NBA Career Stats and Notes
Thomas was selected second overall in the 1981 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons. He played his entire career in the Motor City, leading the Pistons to back to back NBA titles in ‘89 and ‘90. Thomas retired from the NBA after the 1993-94 season. In 2000, Thomas was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Isiah Thomas 1990 NBA Finals MVP
Coming off of their 1989 NBA title, Thomas and the Pistons’ mission was to win it again. After a 59-23 regular season record the Pistons made it back to the Finals with playoff series wins over the Pacers, Knicks and Bulls. Facing the Portland Trail Blazers, the Pistons’ sensational point guard put the icing on his hall of fame career. He averaged 27 points and 7 assists as the Pistons won the series 4-1 and claimed their second straight NBA title. Thomas’ performance earned him NBA Finals MVP.
