Charles Wade Barkley was born on February 20, 1963 in Leeds, AL. He is the son of Charcey Glenn and Frank Barkley. Barkley was raised by his mother after his parents divorced when he was young. Basketball was the sport of choice for Barkley and his chubby frame was an advantage for him when rebounding against players taller than him.
Barkley went to Leeds High School. Due a growth spurt, Barkley went from reserve one season to starter the next. The now 6’4” Barkley was a force on the basketball court. During his senior year, he led his team to the state playoffs. His play earned him a scholarship to Auburn.

Barkley played for Auburn from 1981-84. The three time All-SEC averaged 14 points and 9 rebounds for his college career. During his junior year, Barkley and the Tigers advanced to the 1984 NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. However, the fifth seeded Tigers were upset in the first round by Richmond. Instead of returning for his senior season, Barkley declared for the 1984 NBA Draft.

Charles Barkley NBA Career Stats and Notes
Barkley was selected fifth overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1984 NBA Draft. Barkley played eight seasons for the 76ers before being traded to the Phoenix Suns prior to the 1992-93 season. After four seasons in Phoenix, Barkley played four seasons with the Houston Rockets before retiring in 2000. In 2006, Barkley was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Barkley had his best NBA season during the 1992-93 campaign. In his first year with the Suns, Barkley averaged 25 points and 12 rebounds a game. As a result, the Suns finished with the league’s best record at 62-20 and Barkley was named NBA MVP.
During the 1993 playoffs, the Suns beat the Los Angeles Lakers, San Antonio Spurs and Seattle Super Sonics to claim the western conference title and advance to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1976. Awaiting them was the two-time defending champ Chicago Bulls. The series went to six games with the Bulls taking the series 4-2 and winning their third straight title.
