Robert ‘Bob’ Joseph Cousy was born on August 9, 1928 in Manhattan, NY. He is the son of Juliette and Joseph Cousy. Bob spent the early years of his life in Manhattan before the Cousy family moved to Queens when he turned 12. Growing up, Bob was an active child, playing different types of sports around the neighborhood. Basketball, however, became the sport of choice for Cousy.
Cousy attended Andrew Jackson High School. His rise in basketball didn’t start off great as he was cut several times from the junior varsity team. It wasn’t until after Cousy, who learned to shoot and dribble the ball with both hands, dazzled in pickup games in neighborhood leagues and was invited back to the team. He learned to do both as a result of a right arm break and cousy did everything basketball wise with his left hand. As a senior, Cousy won the city’s scoring title. His success led to a scholarship offer from Holy Cross which he accepted.

Bob Cousy Game Six of the 1963 NBA Finals
During the 1963 NBA Finals, Cousy and the Celtics faced off against the Los Angeles Lakers, a team that featured future Hall of Famers Jerry West and Elgin Baylor. In Game 6 in Los Angeles, Cousy hurt his ankle in the 4th quarter. After being out of the game for some time, the veteran returned with his team's lead down to one. With their playmaker back, the defending champs were able to hold off the Lakers for good. The legendary guard iced the game down the stretch with his skilled dribbling to control the clock. At the end of the game, Cousy launched the ball in the air as the Celtics won 112-109 and captured their fifth straight NBA title. In his last game as a Celtic Cousy went out like all professional athletes want to: as a champion.
