Artis Gilmore was born on September 21, 1949 in Chipley, FL. He is the son of Mattie Lou and Otis Gilmore. Gilmore first sport of choice was football. However, he had a huge growth spurt which put his athletic focus on basketball. By the age of 14, Artis was already 6'5".
The Gilmore family moved to Dotham, AL prior to Artis' senior year and he attended Carver High School. However the big man made the most of that time. The 6’9” Gilmore played well enough to earn Third Team All-American status. His play earned the attention of college programs but he wouldn’t be able to qualify due to his grades. Gilmore opted for the junior college route instead.

After high school, Gilmore enrolled into Gardner-Webb Junior College for two years (1967-69). After his time in junior college, Gilmore transferred to Jacksonville University.
Gilmore played for Jacksonville from 1969-71. He averaged 24.3 points and 22.7 rebounds per game during his college career. Gilmore led the Dolphins to the NCAA tournament both years, including a national title game appearance in 1970 where they would lose to powerhouse UCLA. Gilmore was a two-time All-American (First Team 1971).

Artis Gilmore NBA Career Stats and Notes
Although drafted by the NBA’s Chicago Bulls, Gilmore would opt for the ABA’s Kentucky Colonels. He was in the ABA until it was disbanded in 1976. He then joined the Bulls to start his NBA career. He spent seven seasons in the Windy City before being traded to the San Antonio Spurs in 1982. In 1987 he spent the year with two teams, the Bulls and Boston Celtics. The 1987-88 season would be his last in the NBA. He retired from professional basketball after a season overseas. In 2011, Gilmore was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Gilmore, also known as 'The A-Train', had a solid 12-year career in the NBA. The six-time All-Star had his best years with the Chicago Bulls. During his time with the Bulls, Gilmore averaged 19.3 points and 11.1 rebounds per game, making four All-Star appearances and one Second Team NBA All-Defensive selection.
