Allen Iverson was born on June 7, 1975 in Hampton, VA. He is the son of Ann Iverson and Allen Broughton. Iverson was raised by a single mother in the projects during his younger years. With death and crime rampant where he lived, sports were his way out for his family.  Sports were also a way for him to stay out of trouble as much as possible.

Allen attended Bethel High School. He was a multi-sport star in high school as he was one of the best quarterbacks in Virginia. Not only did he lead his school to state titles in both basketball and football, he was named high school Player of the Year in both sports his junior year. He would earn a scholarship to play college basketball at Georgetown.

Allen Iverson NBA Career Stats and Notes

The Philadelphia 76ers selected Iverson number one overall in the 1996 NBA Draft. The point guard shined in his first season winning NBA Rookie of the Year. Although small in size, Iverson played his game among the giants in the paint, using his infamous crossover to leave defenders behind and on highlight films.

Iverson played in a total of 12 seasons with the 76ers. He also played several seasons with the Denver Nuggets. After short stints with the Memphis Grizzlies and Detroit Pistons, Iverson returned to Philly in 2009 in what would be his last season in the league. Although his last NBA game was in 2010, Iverson officially retired from pro basketball in 2013. Iverson was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016.

Allen Iverson Captures 2000-01 NBA MVP Award

The 2000-01 season was a special one for Iverson. In his fifth year in the league, the dynamic point guard put it all together. He averaged a league leading 31 points, 4 assists per game. He also averaged over 2 steals per game.  The 76ers would take the number one seed in the East with a 56-26 regular season record. His extraordinary play earned him the NBA MVP award. But he wasn’t finished. With series wins over the Pacers, Raptors and Bucks, the 76ers made the NBA Finals for the first time since the 1983 season. They would face Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers.

In Game 1 in the Staples Center, the underdog 76ers didn’t back down from the Lakers. Iverson showed the world on the league’s biggest stage why he was named MVP. Iverson scored a game high 48 points, including seven in overtime. Two of his points in the extra period came on an iconic jumper over Lakers’ guard Ty Lue. The 76ers were victorious 107-101.

Iverson’s magical season didn’t have the ending he wanted as the Lakers would win the next four games and claim the NBA title. It was still one of the best seasons by a guard in NBA history.
