George Kenneth Griffey Jr. was born on November 21, 1969 in Donora, PA. He is the son of Alberta and Ken Griffey Sr. Nicknamed 'The Kid', baseball greatness was destined for Junior. His father had a long career in the major leagues. By the time his son reached high school, the baseball world saw a star in the making.

Griffey attended Moeller High School. Although he was a prodigy, he didn’t start playing high school baseball until his junior year. It didn’t matter as he had scouts from all major league teams coming to his games. He hit 17 HRs during his two high school seasons and had a .478 BA which set a school record.

Ken Griffey Jr. MLB Career Stats and Notes

Griffey was selected 1st overall in the 1987 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners. He made his MLB debut on April 3, 1989. The Kid would spend his first 11 seasons in the league in the Emerald City. He set nearly all of the Mariners’ hitting records and was one of the top athletes not just in baseball, but across all sports in the 1990s.

In 2000, Griffey and the Mariners parted ways. Most sports fans thought Griffey would spend his entire career with Seattle. However the sensational slugger switched teams and leagues as he signed with the Cincinnati Reds. Griffey would spend the next nine seasons in Cincinnati, achieving some historical milestones along the way. He hit his 500th HR on June 20, 2004 and hammered his 600th on June 9, 2008. In 2008, Griffey was traded, this time he landed back in the AL with Chicago White Sox. In 2009, Griffey returned to Seattle where he spent the final two seasons of his career before abruptly retiring during the 2010 season.   Griffey was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016.
