Jeffrey Robert Bagwell was born on May 27, 1968, In Boston, MA. He is the son of Janice and Robert Bagwell. Growing up in Boston Red Sox country, it wasn’t a surprise that the young Bagwell would play the sport. His father was an avid Red Sox fan and would spend countless days playing catch and doing batting practices with his son. The long hours paid off as he raised one of the best players in Houston Astros’ history.

Bagwell attended Xavier High School. He was a two-sport star in high school, but it wasn’t baseball where he made a name for himself then. It was soccer. Bagwell had a sensational senior season, scoring 36 goals which is still a school record . He did receive more scholarship offers for soccer than baseball. Despite the success, Bagwell chose baseball and accepted a scholarship to the university of Hartford.

Jeff Bagwell 1994 NL MVP

What could’ve been? That’s probably the question from all baseball fans during the strike shortened season of 1994. For Bagwell, he was on his way to a historic season. Although his season wasn’t technically cut short by the strike (he suffered a season ending injury two days prior to the strike), Bagwell at the time the season shut down had put up some monster numbers. He hit .368 with 39 HRs and 116 RBI. Even in the shortened season MLB still gave out its annual awards. Bagwell’s sensational season didn’t go unnoticed as he was awarded the 1994 NL MVP award.
