Derek Sanderson Jeter was born on June 26, 1974 in Pequannock, NJ. He is the son Dorothy and Sanderson Charles Jeter. The Jeter family lived in NJ for a few years after Derek was born before moving to Kalamazoo, MI when he was four. Sports, particularly baseball, started early for Derek. He began playing baseball as young as age five. The Yankees’ connection began way before he got drafted by them. Being from NJ, his allegiance to the Bronx Bombers started with his grandparents as they took him to Yankees games during the summers. No one could’ve guessed this young Yankees’ fan would grow up to be one of the best to ever wear their jersey.

Jeter attended Kalamazoo High School. He was a three-sport athlete, running cross country and playing both basketball and baseball. Jeter turned out to be one of the best baseball prospects in the country and garnered the attention of one of the most storied franchises in all of sports, the New York Yankees. They thought of him highly and signed him to a minor league deal after graduating from high school in 1992.

Derek Jeter 2000 World Series MVP

In a career like Jeter's, there are so many legendary moments to pick from. The all-time Yankees’ hit leader came up clutch no matter the situation. And sometimes he set the tone early. In Game 4 of the 2000 World Series against the New York Mets (called the Subway Series), Jeter wasted no time letting their crosstown rival know who runs the city. On the first pitch of the game, Jeter sent a shot into the left field seats. That statement set the stage for the Yankees’ 3-2 road win in Queens. The Yankees would win Game 5 at their rival's house to claim a 4-1 series win. For the series, Jeter hit .409 with 2 HR, 2 RBI and scored six runs to lead the Yankees to their third straight World Series title and fourth in five seasons. The Captain would take home World Series MVP honors.
