Carl Michael Yastrzemski was born on August 22, 1939, in Southampton, NY. He is the son of Hedwig ‘Hattie’ Skonieczny and Carl Yastrzemski Sr. Carl grew up on a farm. However, sports was a passion of his, especially baseball. He played on little league baseball teams that won New York local and state championships. As he got older, he even played on semipro teams with his father as well. The sports’ success as a youth was only the beginning for Carl.

 

 

Yastrzemski attended Bridgehampton High School. He was a three-sport star, excelling in baseball, basketball and football. He set records as a basketball player and hit over .500 on the diamond. His athletic talents earned him a basketball scholarship to Notre Dame.

Yastrzemski played both basketball and baseball at Notre Dame. However, his career as a Fighting Irish was short lived as he would sign a minor league contract with the Boston Red Sox within the first year at college.

Carl Yastrzemski MLB Career Stats and Notes

After a short stint in the minors, Yastrzemski made his major league debut for the Red Sox on April 11, 1961. He spent his entire career in Boston which lasted 23 seasons. Yastrzemski retired after the 1983 season. In 1989, Yastrzemski was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

 

Carl Yastrzemski 1967 Triple Crown Season

Yastrzemski had one of the greatest seasons in MLB history in 1967. In his sixth season, Carl put up monster numbers, and in the process hit for the Triple Crown.. Yastrzemski led the American League with a .326 BA, 44 HRs and 121 RBI, which are the three categories needed to clinch the rare achievement. Carl also led the AL in hits (189), runs scored (113), slugging percentage (.622) and total bases (360). The Red Sox finished with a 92-70 record, won the AL pennant and headed to the World Series. Yastrzemski was a big part of their success and as a result, was voted the 1967 AL MVP. Yastrzemski was the last player to hit for the Triple Crown in MLB for 45 years until the Detroit Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera did it in 2012.
