Shaquille Rashaun O’Neal was born on March 6, 1972 in Newark, NJ. He is the son of Lucille O’Neal and Joe Toney. His mother married Phillip Harrison, who was in the Army, when Shaq was young. Raised by an Army sergeant, Shaq credits his stepfather for instilling the discipline and toughness he showed throughout his legendary basketball career.  

 

 

Shaq attended Cole High School in San Antonio, TX. The big man led his team to an undefeated season his senior year, winning the school’s first ever state title. Shaq was an All-State and high school All-American. With many college offers to choose from, Shaq decided to continued his basketball career at LSU.

Shaq played for LSU from 1989-92. He averaged 21 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks during his college career. He led the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament all three seasons. O’Neal was a 3-time All-SEC selection, 2-time SEC Player of the Year, 2-time consensus All-American and voted College Player of the Year in 1991.

Shaquille O'Neal NBA Career Stats and Notes

Shaq was selected 1st overall in the 1992 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic. He spent four seasons Orlando, leading the franchise to their first NBA Finals appearance in 1995 (lost to Houston Rockets 4-0). In 1996, Shaq went west and joined the Los Angeles Lakers where he would spend the eight seasons.   Teamed with future Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant, Shaq led the Lakers to four NBA Finals appearances, winning three in a row from 2000-02. After the 2003-04 season and his first NBA Finals loss as a Laker, Shaq was traded to the Miami Heat. The move paid dividends for both Miami and Shaq as the Heat won the franchise’s first NBA title in 2006, defeating the Dallas Mavericks 4-2. 

Shaq would play five more seasons in the NBA with three other teams: Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics. In 2011, Shaq retired. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016. 

 

Shaquille O'Neal 1999-00 NBA MVP Season

With a listed height of 7’1 and over 300 pounds, Shaq was definitely a force not seen on the NBA court before or since. The size, strength, nifty footwork and drive to dominate were on full display during the 1999-00 season. What would be the first of three straight title seasons for the Lakers, Shaq put together a monster season: 29.7 points, 13.6 rebounds and 3 blocks per game. He secured his second career scoring title and first NBA MVP Award. The Lakers would defeat the Indiana Pacers 4-2 in the 2000 NBA Finals and Shaq would be named Finals MVP.
