Kobe Bean Bryant was born on August 23, 1978 in Philadelphia, PA. He was the son of Pamela and Joe Bryant. Growing up, Kobe spent time living in Italy as his father, a former NBA player, was playing professionally in Europe. While living across the Atlantic Ocean, Kobe played both basketball and soccer. The Bryant family returned to the United States prior to Kobe entering high school.

Kobe attended Lower Merion High School. He was a high school All-American and National High School Player of the Year in 1996. That same year, Kobe led his team to a state title. The talented guard decided not to go to college and instead went straight to the NBA.

Kobe Bryant NBA Career Stats and Notes

Bryant was selected 13th overall by the Charlotte Hornets in the 1996 NBA Draft, however a draft day trade sent him to the Los Angeles Lakers. Kobe would spend 20 seasons with the Lakers, playing in seven NBA Finals (winning five). An 18-time All-Star, Bryant retired after the 2015-16 season in the most Kobe fashion. In his last game ever, a home contest against the Utah Jazz, Kobe went wild. A top three scorer in NBA history at the time, Kobe scored 60 points, a record for most points in a player’s last game. He was elected into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020.

Kobe Bryant Back to Back NBA Finals

There were some turbulent times for Kobe in his playing career since the loss in the 2004 NBA Finals against the Detroit Pistons. Future Hall of Famer and teammate Shaquille O’Neal was traded that offseason and from that point on, Kobe was the man in LA. However it didn’t translate into any postseason success and in LA ‘success’ meant championships. He had some brilliant individual moments such as dropping 81 points in 2006 or 62 in Madison Square Garden. No championships.

It took four years for the Lakers to get back to being one of the best teams in the league. During the 2007-08 season, Kobe, surrounded by good players such as Pau Gasol, Trevor Ariza and Lamar Odom, won his first NBA MVP Award as the Lakers finished with a 57-25 recod and the top seed in the West. The climb to the top wasn't complete as the Lakers fell to the Boston Celtics in the 2008 NBA Finals in six games.

For Kobe, the ultimate goal was to win a title again, to show that he could lead a team to the top. The Lakers made the Finals the next year and the opponent was the Orlando Magic. This was Kobe’s time. When the dust settled, the Lakers were champions once again, winning the 2009 NBA Finals in 5 games. Kobe got his first NBA Finals MVP honor. The Lakers would repeat as champs by beating the Celtics in a classic 7 game series in 2010. Kobe again was named Finals MVP and tied the great Hall of Famers Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with five titles as Lakers’ players.
