Karl Malone NBA Career Stats and Notes
Karl was selected 13th overall in the 1985 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz. He and Hall of Fame teammate John Stockton were one of the best duos in NBA history. While Stockton would retire as the all-time assists leader in NBA history, he had one of the best scorers to pass the ball to as Malone, nicknamed The Mailman, delivered time and time again. Malone played 18 seasons with the Jazz, before signing a one year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2003. Malone retired in 2005, leaving as 2nd all-time in points scored with 36,928. In 2010, Malone was inducted in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Karl Malone, Jazz 1996-97 and 1997-98 Western Conference Champions
Malone and the Jazz were perennial playoff participants throughout his career. They came close to reaching the NBA Finals but fell short. In 1996, for instance, they lost to the Seattle SuperSonics in the Western Conference Finals in seven games.
The Jazz finally broke through in 1997, defeating the Houston Rockets 4-2, thanks largely to Hall of Famer John Stockton’s game winning shot that clinched the West title. The next year, Malone's strong play led the Jazz back to the Finals, sweeping the Los Angeles Lakers to defend their West crown. These were the most successful seasons for the franchise but Malone and company couldn’t complete the mission. The Chicago Bulls defeated the Jazz both years on their way to winning three straight titles.
